Banarasi sarees: A Traditional Legacy
In the 14th century, when the Mughals came to power, the weaving business in northern India, especially around Agra, changed. The people who wove in Uttar Pradesh used to make clothes out of cotton, but the Mughals pushed for silk weaving, which led to the booming silk industry we see today. The famous and highly valued Banarasi silk saree is said to have come from the city of Varanasi, which used to be called Banaras.
What is Banarasi Saree
Banarasi Saree is a traditional dress that people wear to weddings and other special events. It is made by weaving together pure silk threads in a complicated way. Weavers in Varanasi are very good at this art, and the way they make brocade is called Kinkhabs.
Along with Kanjivaram, Banarasi sarees are the silk sarees that Indian women like to wear the most. The zari work in gold or silver on the heavy brocade work on the saree is what makes it stand out. Many brides wear it on their wedding day. In West Bengal, brides are known to wear a red banarasi saree with gold work and a lot of gold jewellery. Celebrities are now endorsing it, which has helped it become very popular.
Banarasi Silk Sari Comes in Different Types
Based on how the fabric is woven, banarasi sarees online can be put into four groups.
Pure silk (katan)
The banarasi katan silk saree is the most pure type of Banarasi silk, and it has a very soft texture. It is made of pure silk threads and has a plain weave, making it perfect for brides to wear on their wedding day. The rest of the saree has heavy gold brocade work spread out evenly and a patterned pallu. People from all over the world have been impressed by this way of weaving.
Organza with zari work
A different way is used to weave the kora organza saree. It is made with raw silk threads and zari threads made of pure gold and silver. The result is a silk saree that is thin, see-through, and has a light metallic shine all over it. It feels rougher than Katan silk, but it is very comfortable to wear to any special event. To make the metallic threads lighter, gold is used to polish the silver fibres before they are carefully wound on a silk thread.
Georgette
A banarasi georgette saree is made of silk and has a plain weave. It is light and has an open texture. It feels a little rough to the touch, but it falls beautifully around the body. It is often dyed in bright colours to show off the shine of the silk fibres.
Shattir
Shattir is a unique fabric that is used to make a certain type of pure banarasi saree. It makes it possible for modern designs and ideas to be used. The pattern is easy to see and people want it a lot because it is so simple.

How much does it cost to buy a Banarasi saree?
Most of the time, the price of a Banarasi saree is high because it has a lot of intricate details. The price of the saree goes up because it has pure silk threads and real zari work. It costs between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 3–4 Lakhs.
Is banarasi silk pure silk?
Pure mulberry silk threads and pure silver and gold zari are used to make a Banarasi silk saree. Mulberry silk is one of the best kinds of silk that you can buy. A true banarasi will be made from authentic raw materials and will be woven in the same way that weavers from Varanasi do. The designs and motifs are also a big part of how pure they are.
Is banarasi silk soft?
Banarasi silk saree, which is also called Katan silk, is known for how soft it is. It is made with the softest mulberry silk, which is used to weave it. Its delicate weaving method helps keep the fabric soft and makes it look royal when it is draped in an elegant way.
How are Banarasi and Kanjivaram sarees different?
Banarasi saree and Kanjivaram saree are both made with real silver and gold zari and pure mulberry silk. But the way they are woven, the patterns and motifs, and where they come from are all different. Kanjivaram saree comes from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, while Banarasi saree comes from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Designs for Banarasi sarees have heavy zari borders and a butidar pattern all over the body. The heavy gold zari brocade border on Kanjivaram sarees is also based on temples. They also come in bright colours that stand out from each other.
